Syria Circa 2010
It's been 7 years since we made a trip there, and 6 years since the country's been at war.
Many of the beautiful places we travelled to and around are long since gone. Similarly, it is likely that many of the locals we met are either refugees in Turkey or Europe, in hiding or no longer alive.
It especially hit close to home when, of all places, I was in a small town in central Japan and met a family who looked at my Facebook photos and said that's all gone. They had moved to Tokyo for work, and would never have a homeland again. Did they miss Syria I asked, the answer known to me even before I asked.
For all the lovely places and people in and of Syria, I'll start a series about fresh fruit juice, Palmyra, comfortable rooftop hotels, hardly used paved roads, history, culture, wonders of souks, hummus and castle ruins.
